Hey all, which’s Ginny here with another design agony along with which time we’re talking about painting wood paneling. Our client Mickey emailed us with the following question:
Should I paint our den/office? I know which’s ugly paneling, yet the built-ins are beautiful solid wood along with very high quality. I cannot decide what to do! I’ve been contemplating which for 3 years at which point. I feel like the room can be dark (the curtains aren’t helping), along with I haven’t put any style/decor effort in because I don’t love the space. My husband LOVES which room just the way which can be (of course, men love which gross paneling!).
So, my question can be, should I paint which? If so, do I have to paint everything (paneling, built-ins, along with trim)? Or can I simply paint over the paneling along with leave the trim along with built ins? along with if I leave the built-ins as can be, do I paint the paneling which’s behind them – you can see which from the shelf space. Also, if I paint the room do I have to paint the section of ceiling from the bay window which can be wood (last picture). Finally, if you do think I should paint which, do you think I should go light or having a cool indigo or bolder shade? I need help!!!!
The rest of our house can be painted in whites or very light greys/beiges, with white trim. I could say the style of the house can be cottage-y. We live in a rural setting in Pennsylvania.
Coming from the before photos you can see which the bones are pretty Great, along with the cabinet doors are simple in style with no fussy flourishes. yet the main issue here can be definitely the shade – which’s just way too orange. We narrowed which down to two main design directions (white vs blue) which Mickey could follow, along with in both instances we recommended painting all of the wood work from the same shade, including the shelves, framing along with back wall.
By doing which which could feel more cohesive along with impactful. Let us be clear – if you have a beautiful wood den, or wood paneling in any shade in a pretty tone which you love, KEEP which. We love beautiful original wood as much as the next guy. yet if its orange along with dated then you do have some options.
Paint Colors: White Dove by Benjamin Moore | Cabbage White by Farrow along with Ball | Wevet by Farrow along with Ball
which can be what we sent to Mickey along with our recommendation:
With what you have said about the rest of your house being light along with airy which might be nice to bring which theme into which room too. In option 1 we are suggesting which you paint everything in a soft white, something which which not too stark yet incorporates a calming feel to which. You could also add some some other pops of colour in here on your seat bench, along with we’d suggest which you paint the underside of the window seat ceiling to match.
Which will feel super fresh along with compliment the amount of natural lighting you have coming in through the windows. We suggest to remove the drapes along with instead do simple roman shades. We also think which you could do away with the window treatments altogether, unless you need them for privacy. With either drapes or shades, you’re going to lose some light because they are mounted on the inside along with will end up covering part of the window. which can be another reason for us suggesting to remove them. We could paint out the room first before tackling the windows.
Paint Colors: Cooks Blue by Farrow along with Ball | Stiffkey Blue by Farrow along with Ball | Lulworth Blue by Farrow along with Ball
Our second option can be to go for a dusty blue colour. We feel which can be the one we could suggest you go for, because which’ll bridge the gap between you wanting to repaint along with your husband wanting to keep which dark. Whilst we love the idea of the white, which might be genuinely fun to bring in some colour to your house if you mainly have whites, greys along with neutrals elsewhere. which could be a super cosy reading room, along with you already possess the leather chairs which could look amazing against the blue.
We’re also suggesting to do the fabric on the built-ins blue too, with maybe a stripe or pattern to give some texture. We could take the drapery advise above along with get another great blue which works with the wall colour. You could always do a white shade to keep the windows feeling white if you didn’t want to go full on blue. Accessorize with leather, white along with greys. We are actually very excited by which route along with I wish you go for which!
We also suggested which they replace the hardware to something which could pop more against the brand new colour. Take a look at what we got back coming from them after they painted.
They wasted no time at all in painting the room along with sent us some progress shots along having a note:
We absolutely loved the design along with went with the stiffkey blue. I commenced priming which same day. I was able to restore the existing hardware. I attached some pictures, yet the lighting isn’t the best. For the decor I used pieces around the house which we already had along with will continue to refine as time along with budget allow. which can be still very much a work in progress.
Thank you for all your help. Our den can be a million times better at which point along with we LOVE the blue – even my husband can be glad we made the switch 🙂 I couldn’t have done which without your help!
We love the leather along with wood accents which are in here at which point. along with I think swapping out some of the wood photo frames to black on the shelves will help them bring in another colour to the room. I think a mix of blue, white along with black pillows could also look awesome in here too.
Look how amazing her knobs turned out which she restored. They are super fun along with full of character along with well worth keeping. They pop off the cabinetry way more at which point along with accent the wall colour beautifully.
Even though I don’t love the idea of blocking the light, I might be tempted to hang roman shades on the windows just to add some softness for the colder months. I also like the pop of white coming from the seat bench yet I’d still love to see a patterned fabric on here or even a throw blanket draped over.
Considering Mickey pulled together a few things she had coming from around the rest of the house, which’s looking genuinely cute. I’m actually genuinely glad they went with the blue because which makes which feel like a cozy library along with genuinely modernizes the paneling. If which were my space I’d totally want to hang out here along with read a book having a cup of tea.
