A Rustic Mid-Century Family Room

Sometimes we get clients that will are based right here in LA, who don’t want to do the full service design, yet still want to take advantage of our initial in-person consultation, along with our E-Design service. So today, we’re sharing an example of one of those clients (no, not the photo above – that will’s Bri’s house that will I designed years ago however this kind of was a big source of inspiration for the client so we made this kind of our opener photos.)

Ginny traveled down the coast to Palos Verdes to meet with the Davidson family, who are a very sweet family of 4, with two young boys (one of whom was very interested in what Ginny was doing when she was measuring out the room. They may have a budding designer on their hands).

Living Room Before

In their E-Design submission they wrote that will they needed help with the design as well as also structure of their 1960’s California ranch-style family/living room. They were having trouble creating the room feel warm as well as also inviting, as well as also in keeping This kind of kid-friendly without going too over the top kid-friendly. They mainly use the room to hang as well as also watch TV, so This kind of gets quite a bit of use. Stylistically they have a love of rustic, mid-century modern, as well as also wanted “bright, friendly colors, however open to suggestions.

The room gets great light as well as also we don’t want to darken the area,” as well as also didn’t want to see “dark brooding colors. Uniquely sharp edges as well as also objects.” They were pretty open to replacing most things inside the room except for the TV on the wall, the two blue chairs (which are great as well as also we wouldn’t have replaced them anyway), the piano, as well as also the mantle.

One of the main issues with This kind of room is actually the structure, as well as also as you can probably see by the photos above, the sofa covers up the fireplace. as well as also although us Angelinos don’t always require a big roaring fire, if you have one this kind of’s nice to have This kind of on display, or even use this kind of on those 5 days of the year when the temperature dips below 60 (eye roll)!

One of our designers, Ali, got to work on the overall look as well as also feel as well as also came up with these very happy, bright, as well as also playful inspiration images that will give off that will cosy California, rustic, mid-century vibe they were looking for.

After chatting with Ginny about the structure, Ali came up with two options that will might help to expose the fireplace, yet still allow a not bad amount of seating for the family. This kind of was a tricky room to lay out, because the piano could only fit in one spot, as well as also the TV was already mounted to the wall as This kind of logistically didn’t make sense to move this kind of elsewhere. Although this kind of allowed for a lot of seating, their existing sectional was genuinely taking over the room. We tried to make this kind of work in several different locations however just ended up causing more problems, which is actually why we ended up switching this kind of out to a smaller sofa with different sets of chairs.

Although the first option does work well as well as also allows all the pieces to be in there, the sofa feels slightly tight to the piano as well as also the fireplace wall. The second option works better on paper, as well as also allows a better navigation through the space. This kind of also allows for a more open entrance into the space by the hallway.

Ali came up with the two options above, the only difference being the coffee tables: One is actually square, as well as also the different rectangular. Here is actually what we sent them to accompany their presentation:

Sofa/Chairs: We kept your existing side chairs, however opted to add a sofa as well as also a leather wing back chair inside the space instead of a sectional. We feel this kind of fits much better as well as also allows you to take advantage of your fireplace. We picked this kind of cool mid-century style sofa in a neutral gray colour, which is actually nice for kids as well as also is actually a not bad foundation for bringing in colour as well as also pattern with the use of different pillows. For the pillows, we picked yellow as well as also blue options in patterns that will coordinate nicely with the artwork. We also picked a lounger chair in a navy as well as also aqua colour combo as a fun addition for the kids.

Credenza: We kept the credenza inside the same location. However, we shopped around as well as also found this kind of unique vintage credenza in a beautiful solid oak wood.  This kind of is actually in great condition as well as also sized perfectly to fit the space. This kind of also allows for extra storage.

Coffee Table: To keep things warm as well as also inviting, we gave you two options of a wood coffee table with built-in storage.  Both of these options work well for the structure of the space, with one being square as well as also the different rectangular.

Rug: Went that has a simple Moroccan style rug that has a simple playful pattern. This kind of feels very cozy, as well as also will pop off the wood floors.

Mantle/Art Options: We might suggest adding a larger as well as also thicker piece of wood as your mantle as well as also then love the idea of switching out your existing mirror for a more simple option such as this kind of round brass option. We also like the idea of accessorizing by leaning smaller art on one side, as well as also possibly vases or another sculptural item on the different side. We included several different art options in brighter colors that will all coordinate well with each different as well as also the different colors inside the room.

Bookcase/Built Ins: Because there are a lot of woods as well as also colour inside the space, we like the idea of keeping things light as well as also balanced, as well as also selected this kind of white parsons bookcase. On the different side of the fireplace, where you have built-ins, we suggest switching out those shelves to thicker wood shelves (maybe even using a reclaimed wood) as shown inside the inspiration photos.

Drapes: Because the main window inside the room is actually so large, we suggest doing custom drapes in a light colored linen fabric. Barn & Willow offers an easy way to custom order the specific size to fit your windows. (Note: the cost on the spreadsheet is actually an estimate) – (note: we always include a cost breakdown spreadsheet with links in order that will this kind of’s easy for clients to purchase the products).

Walls: We have suggested that will you paint the walls out in a gray, however the concept might work well if you were to paint the walls white. We might suggest White Dove as This kind of has more of a creaminess to this kind of, so this kind of’s not as stark white.

They came back that has a very lovely response to the presentation we sent them “Big thanks to everyone who worked on this kind of project. Well done! We love the options as well as also look forward to incorporating nearly all of the suggestions. The one piece that will may not work is actually the credenza. Even though we love the style, uniqueness, as well as also storage aspects of the piece, this kind of wouldn’t work well as a media cabinet. If you have different suggestions for that will specific piece, that will might be great.  Otherwise the plans are wonderful as well as also we appreciate all the hard work!”

With our E-Designs we tend to offer one round of revisions included inside the cost, however this kind of is actually depending on the extent of the revisions required. With this kind of being a quicker update we were able to include this kind of within our scope of works. We sent them 6 different options of media units that will we felt might work with their design. I think our favorite, that will’s most similar to the original credenza, might be #3 as well as also #4.  Overall they were super happy with the results as well as also are expecting the sofa, coffee table, as well as also media unit This kind of week!
